Flood Water Damage in Your Vehicle? How to Know

Flood damaged vehicles could affect you in two ways:

1. perhaps your vehicle was in a flood and you need to know if it was damaged or…
2. purchasing a used vehicle and later learning it has been flood damaged can be very problematic and lead to costly issues down the road.

Worse yet…flood damaged vehicles can be unhealthy to occupy because mold and bacteria are growing in the carpet and ventilation system.

Remember it’s always a good idea to take the vehicle to a professional for an inspection. Before you start the engine …check the oil. If it looks milky…there may be water in the engine. The vehicle should be towed to your engine repair shop. Driving the vehicle with water present may damage the internal parts and require extensive overhauls or repairs.  The repair technician can raise the car and look underneath to see if there’s any mud sticks or rocks in the suspension or evidence of corrosion. They can check the oil in the differentials, engine and transmission to make sure they contain no water.
